Boat Housekeeping

Bunks

I have already pointed out how important good bunks are, both in size and accessibility. Mar Claro, for example, at only 24 feet, had good 6'4" bunks that were full-size in every way. We had large male friends aboard, football coaches and other husky types, but they were not cramped. Also, as stated, awkward access can be very annoying, with the “pigeonhole” type berth the worst offender. We had fitted sheets for the bunks on Brunelle, whieh Jane tailored herself. These made making up the bunks easy. We had Dacron blankets, but they were hardly ever used in the Caribbean. In northern cruising, sleeping bags can be a good idea.

Bunk mattress covers take a beating, and the right material is important. On Tanagra, the material was a rather loose weave of non-synthetic cloth and it wore out quickly, in less than two years. Brunelle s material was a tightly woven synthetie with a nubbly surface that showed no signs of wear after nine seasons, and it is certainly worth getting the right stuff for this job. Foam pillows are best to limit moisture absorp-

tion.

For those who would like some style with their bunk bedding, there are “designer” sleeping bags. Marine bedding is now made a choice of shapes and models that can be arranged as a double sleeping bag, single sleeping bags, or separated at the shoulders and joined at the legs to be opened from underneath, jointly or individually. There are many designs and patterns, fitted sheets for triangular and tapered bunk mattresses, and pack-bags for coming aboard with soft luggage.

It always annoys me to come aboard a boat in which there has been very little thought given to bunk placement, or, if any time at all is to be spent aboard, to a good setup for reading. Lights should be carefully placed for this, one for each bunk, well-directed to the individual bunk and shaded from the neighboring one.
